Do you have it? SPARK that is!
Actually, we each have it...our own unique way of bringing the best of ourselves to what we do each day. But did you know that being deliberate about YOU can make you happier and more successful? Being deliberate is being aware and living life on purpose. I heard a wonderful quote (wish I could remember who said it); "life happens THROUGH you, not to you"!
Each letter in SPARK, is a key attribute or quality of successful leaders. Now when I say "leader", it doesn't necessarily mean you have to be leading a team on the job. I'm referring to that AND so much more!
I'm talking about how you lead your life. Every encounter with co-workers, friends, family and "strangers" speaks volumes about how you are leading your life in that moment. If you add up all these moments over a period of time, you get a pretty good view of you; what's important to you, how you communicate, empower, engage and experience life.
STRENGTH. Your strengths aren't necessarily the things you do where you excel. The things you are "good at" are your natural abilities. And you may not even like doing the things you are naturally good at!
Your strengths can be found by answering these questions:
So what do you love to do?
What gives you energy when you do it? (or an exhaustion that feels like a high)
What consumes you when doing it that you hardly realize time has passed?
What satisfies you immensely?
What feeds your soul?
What do you do that brings out the best in you?
All the answers to these questions are strengths. Another analogy is food. If you eat nutritious food, it fuels you with energy, you can think more clearly, make better decisions, get the promotion and you have an extra skip in your step! This habit of consuming these types of food is a strength because it fuels your greatness. Using the same analogy, if you for instance were to consume junk food as a regular diet, this would be considered a habit that reinforces the opposite of a strengths....it drains you of energy, creates lethargy, brain fog and you will probably struggle in your aspirations.
1. Make 3 columns on a piece of paper. The first column is for activities, the second column is for "strengths" and the next column is for "drains".
2. For the next week, keep a short list of your work activities, social events, hang out times and to do's.
3. Keep this list top-of-mind and at-hand.
4. For each activity, check either the "strengths" column or the "drains" column.
5. How will you know which column to check? (Answer: It's all in how you feel!)
(i.e.; Are you anticipating the activity with excitement or dread? Does it make you feel accomplished or defeated? Are you focused and eager or rushing through the task unfocused? Do you feel energized or drained?)
6. Action: Review your list; decide what "strengths" you want to amp up (so you can do more of what you love) and choose what "drains" you want to minimize.
Congratulations! This is the first step to SPARK your life and business leadership!
