Yes, you read that correctly! I am going to have a love affair......with my heart! February is National Heart Health Month and so what better time to start new heart-ful rituals and refresh some old ones. Rituals don't need to be time consuming. Sometimes it's as simple as remembering to take your Omega 3 vitamin. Did you ever think about what your heart does for you? I mean, every second, of every hour, of every day, of every week, of every month, of every year for your entire life....your heart is beating for you! It never lets you down. That's incredible. The heart is also a part of our colloquialism: "have a heart", "with all my heart", "the heart of the matter", "heartfelt", "let your heart be your guide", "wear your heart on your sleeve", and the list goes on!
According to the Institute of HeartMath, the heart has been scientifically proven to have an intelligence all its own and communicates with the brain. The heart has also been referred to as "the other brain." Your heart is often your signal of danger when it rapidly beats and can be used to calm and center yourself.
So, in celebration of Valentine's Day and the Month of February, here are 10 ways you too can have a love affair with your heart:
1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. "Go the extra mile" and add 2,000 steps to your day.
2. Pace Instead of Race. Slow it down and take conscious breaths several times a day.
3. Accept The Things You Cannot Change. Let go of trying to fix everything.
4. Help others. Giving back to others is a self-ful act and good for your heart and soul.
5. Quiet the negative self-talk. Try saying I love you, I love you, I love you!
6. Get more sleep. On Sundays, set your alarm clock just 15 minutes later.
7. Watch an I Love Lucy episode and have a good belly laugh.
8. Getting it off your chest is good for your heart.
9. Smile. It's an easy way to burn calories.
10. Listen to your heart. Yes, your heart does speak to you.....close your eyes, put your hand on your heart and silently ask a question. And just listen.

Thrival Tip #3: Rinse and Repeat!
If you have a bottle of hair conditioner in your shower, I’m sure the words “rinse and repeat” are printed in bold letters on the directions label. Simple – for the best results from that product, use it over and over and over. It is the same philosophy here. For the best results, repeat, repeat, repeat. Consistency. And consistency builds momentum. Here is where you are thriving with all cylinders! Now, during the course of a busy day, with meetings, emails, phone calls, doctor appointments, et al, one might wonder how to remember to thrive. Schedule it. That’s right….schedule it. Use your IPad, outlook calendar, set an alert on your IPhone or yes, the good old-fashioned day planner, and schedule “TIME TO THRIVE” in all caps! Even if only for five minutes, several times each day. Remember, you are building a muscle, creating a new habit.
Thriving is feeling alive and fully engaged in what is happening right now. Thriving doesn’t mean you won’t have your ups and downs. Thriving in spite of challenges means you get to choose your thoughts and habits to help you navigate stepping off the edge of madness and land firmly on the edge of peace.
_Thrival Tip #2: The Micro-Shift
Congratulations! Once you’ve stopped – even for just a minute or two minute, you have now created what I call a micro-shift. It’s like that saying how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Small and subtle, sort of like a dripping faucet, but when consistent (that’s another tip); accumulated micro-shifts create a current in the creative energy pool. And that’s a pool you want to swim in! The creative energy pool is the life force of everything around us and everything that we are. Drop by drop, ripple by ripple and soon you will marvel at the ease in which things begin to happen for you. Set your goal and dream it complete; apply micro-shifts or baby steps and you are on your way to getting your thrive on.
_ The Cosmic Shift
Waiting for the occurrence of the great cosmic shift that you think will make it “all better”, bring happiness and success, is like that long list of well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions. It doesn’t last. I know, I know…this can be a painful reality and may be enough to make you want to stop reading this right now! But, wait. Just hang in there!
As a society, we’ve grown so used to expecting things to be instant. Fast food drive-thrus, instant oatmeal and heaven forbid if a computer connection takes longer than 2 seconds. Our need for instantness is particularly true when it comes to discomfort. We want to solve it, change it, get rid of it...NOW. And, I’m pretty sure that’s not what Ekhart Tolle meant by the Power of Now.
Thrival Tip #1: Stop The World, I Want To Get Off!
I have discovered the fasted way out of overwhelm and clearing out the dark cloud of the funkies is to simply stop. I’m not suggesting surrender in defeat. It is giving yourself permission to regroup and breathe. Stop the mind chatter, berating yourself for not moving through a problem more quickly, being angry at commitments and those around you who are making demands and just STOP. Put up that big old stop sign. You’ll see that your world won’t fall apart! It may feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, it will become second-nature. In fact, once you stop the resistance to what is, a subtle shift of energy actually makes room for more of what you really do want to take place.
How To Step From The Edge of Madness To The Edge of Peace.......
I really dislike survival – well, I mean the word survival. Just seems like you’re barely getting by and hanging on by a thread. Truth be told, this is what the edge of madness looks and feels like. Haven’t you flirted on the edge of madness yourself? What if there was another way? Can you learn to thrive? Make a habit of thriving? Build up a thrival muscle instead of feeling like of victim of circumstance stuck in survival mode? Yes, yes and yes!
Let’s face it. Sometimes no matter how good the advice is, you still feel stuck and overwhelmed. You want things to be different. But, you are just too busy to cram anything else into your life, even if it is going to help make things more manageable! That is exactly how I felt (and still do sometimes)! And, some days, it is perfectly reasonable to sit in the center of the madness and just wave the white flag (in fact, I highly recommend it). Until, of course, the next demand on your time creeps up and drags you right back into the thick of things. And you think to yourself, “can’t I even have a pity-party in peace”?
It is because I know busy, and I’ve experienced the madness that I made The Busy Woman’s Guide To How To Get Your Thrive On simple. It is not about doing anything, but instead it is about undoing. After all, all the doing is what keeps us stuck on the hamster wheel. Undoing – or being – is the antidote from survival to thrival. Stay tuned as I reveal The Busy Woman's Guide To How To Get Your Thrive On -- Tip #1.
Happy New Year! So it is only the first day of a new year and if you are like me, you are already feeling pressure to do things differently, better, easier! But, how could you have possibly accomplished your goals in one day? Lose the weight, start a pamper routine, pick up the journal started last July, etc. And the list goes on! So, I've decided to tell the little voice in my head to stop. Just stop. And sit here, right NOW, and smile. Yest, that's it. Just smile (this burns calories too). Then I can start a new...each moment of each day counts as an opportunity to start fresh, change, do things differently. So, no need for all the pressure of the New Year's resolution. Definitely set goals and make a plan......but always stop to enjoy and re-focus in the NOW!
