Welcome again to the Guilty Pleasures Revolution!
Today, on Day 7, we're going to talk about our senses and how dulled we can become to them.
Advances are always being made to give us a perceived enhanced living experience. We’ve moved from black-and-white film to Technicolor; from mono to stereo to quadrophonic sound and Dolby; from reel-to-reel to vinyl to 8-track, cassette, CD and digital; from HD to 3D and by the time I’m done, we may even have smell-o-vision! Heck, even our taste-buds have advanced with an additional tasting sense: Umami (that’s right, ladies…….“ooooo mommy!”). (Technically we’ve always had this taste sensation, but it hadn’t been recognized.)
In the name of progress, our senses are deluged in every way imaginable. This sensory overload is a key contributor to overwhelm and fatigue – especially for women. When we experience this, our senses actually dull, and fine tuning of the lovely details of life are lost.
In actuality (and thankfully), if we want to experience an enhanced life, the remedy is effortless. It is the old adage of less is more. And since we’ve already discussed multi-tasking, are you ready to come to your senses?
Try these three exercises to enliven and awaken your senses, and then take the self-assessment (link to self-assessment at the bottom of this post):
1. Do you hear what I hear?
The next time you are in a crowded, noisy environment, try bringing to your attention one particular sound over all the rest. Now try listening for the tiny sound that is under all the rest. Focus, listen, and fine tune. Or when playing music you love, try to listen for a particular instrument and only hear that one tone. Or focus in on the harmony of one voice in a song. Now listen for the silence between the notes... between the breaths. I guarantee you will experience the music in a whole new way, and discover something new that you’ve not heard before! What else is life trying to tell you?
1. How sweet it is.
All right, you chocolate lovers…. this is a tough assignment. I give you permission to eat a morsel of the finest piece of chocolate, but not too fast! Follow these steps:
3. That’s so touching.
When we use our hands to touch things, do we really feel what we are touching? Take the keys you type on. Really feel what each key feels like under the pads of your fingers. Or when you hold hands with someone, notice the softness, the warmth, the size of the hand in yours. Notice handshakes and the force or pressure. Feel the softness or crispness of fresh sheets; are they cool to the touch or warm from the dryer? Are the fibers raised? Close your eyes and touch the petals of a rose. Feel the velvety smoothness, the curves; compare each petal with your fingers.
When we slow down and focus and mindfully use our senses, we awaken to a world of beauty that has been in front of us all along.
Now, take the Come to Your Senses Self-Assessment.
Affirmation for Day 7: I awaken my senses to the world around me.
