SPARK the Rebel!
So who was your favorite rebel singer back in the day? Were you rocking out to Joan Jett (like the picture to the left)? Or was it the mellower vibe of Joni Mitchell? Don’t think Joni Mitchell falls into the rebel category? Well you may want to take a second listen!
My definition of a rebel is someone whose genius SPARK is too big to be contained and who passionately takes the path less traveled.
Some would say, that when you “grow up” and become a responsible adult, the wild and reckless rebel needs to go be a thing of the past. But I say that’s exactly when your rebel needs to be channeled! Not to wreak havoc, but to propel you in the direction of leading a SPARKtacular life!
Here’s what the ugliness can look like when you don’t allow your rebel to breathe and inspire you:
*You are simply “doing” a job
*You lose inspiration to try new things and take risks
*You settle for “good enough”
*The rebel sneaks out (because it is a part of you that cannot be denied!) and runs up the credit card or sabotages your eating plan
Now, here is what it can look like when the rebel is allowed to come out and play (instead of being suppressed) and SPARK some positive action:
*You stand confidently in your power
*You takes calculated risks that pay off big time
*You think outside the box and get noticed at work
*You bring deep commitment and passion to a project
*You SPARK others to do the same
Imagine using your SPARKrebel energy to provide you with the courage you need to talk to your boss about a promotion?
Or maybe your SPARKrebel will cause you to explore the idea you had months ago of starting your own business?
And better yet, your SPARKrebel will remind you to live happier, lighter and free-er!
3 Ways to Re-connect with Your Rebel!
Sometimes looking to the past for important threads that connect us to today can be a useful. Remember you want to connect to the positive power of the rebel, not regret. We all did our best with what we had at the time. Call up the times when you were care free. (i.e., Look to the times when you took a chance that paid off; stepped up and took over; stood up for someone else; courageous moments; silly-fun moments.) You want to get that felt sense grounded in your mind and body again.
*What did you feel like? (i.e., I felt powerful, I felt free)
*Where were these positive feelings in your body? (i.e., I felt a rush of energy in my legs that made me want to jump. I felt my lungs fill will air and I wanted to yell with joy.)
*Were you smiling?
*Were you laughing?
Take the time to revisit those SPARKmoments and journal about how you felt. Really paint a detailed account so you feel as though you are there again! If there is a videotape of your SPARKmoment, watch it over and over. If you can’t recall something, ask a friend or relative who knows you well and wants to support you in this and help you remember your rebel-ness! Keep it positive!
2. Rock it out!
Music is such a powerful force. Choose your favorite toe tapping tune and get up and move that body. Pump up the volume, roll down the windows and sing! Get your energy flowing. Feel your body come alive! Dance around the kitchen. Hum on your way to work. If music isn’t your thing, choose something that infuses positive energy flow.
3. Color Outside The Lines
Seriously? Yes, seriously! There is nothing more freeing than doing something you’re not supposed to do right? That’s the rebel energy! If you don’t have a coloring book and crayons you can borrow (wink, wink), I invite you to spend some time in a toy store and get some – the child-like energy is closely related to the rebel! The point of this exercise is to pull yourself out of the day-to-day and add glimmers of fun and freedom. This may seem silly, but isn't it nice to give yourself permission to play? Sometimes it's the simple, silly things that ignite the SPARK!
