So it’s a new year with lots of resolutions being set, goals being formulated and dreams being built. Now, I have a question for you? How’s it going so far at not even one month into this year? Are you discouraged yet? Changing course yet? If you are waning in your convictions, don’t lose heart…you are not alone. Sadly, statistics say only about 8% of people who make resolutions actually reach their goals.
AND, that is why I don’t make resolutions! It’s not because I don’t have dreams or goals, it’s because I see the opportunity to create, re-create and re-create some more, no matter the date on my calendar. And this takes grit!
What is grit you ask? Grit is part courage, part creativity and part sticktoitiveness. It’s the ability to ride the ups and downs with grace and a good dose of humor. It’s digging deep and doing what needs to get done. It’s taking a hard look at what’s not working, what is working and choosing behaviors to create more of the latter. As a leader, the ability to demonstrate grit can make or break your team’s effectiveness because your actions become guideposts for their actions. Here are my top grit-building tools to help set you up for success in 2017!
Top Grit-Building Techniques for Leaders
Be Flexible: It may seem counter-intuitive, but being flexible actually requires planning. Always build in an extra cushion of time when creating deadlines, so if/and when things go awry, you can still maintain pulling the project through on time and on budget. When you have this breathing space (literally and figuratively) scheduled in, you can explore more creative options as well.
Be Sticktoitive: To quote Zig Ziglar, “Getting knocked down in life is a given. Getting up and moving forward is a choice.” In all the day-to-day busy-ness of a deadline-driven world, it’s easy to forget you have choice. So…slow down a bit. Remember to choose how you feel and then respond. Remember to remember the prize (your goal). Choose again, get up and start moving forward. That’s sticktoitive.
