So on a typical late Wednesday afternoon, I experienced a little bit of magic! Well, actually my dog Lucy did. Here we were elbow deep in 6th grade math (never a good thing), the last round of laundry was spinning, dinner was cooking, and the cell phone was buzzing. All seemed to be in order.
Suddenly the sky grew dark. The winds whipped up. The trash cans on the side of the house were being tossed about like the leaves of late fall. I tried to think of what wasn't tied down in the back yard and quickly took inventory. My son's lacrosse bounce-back (which is about 7' tall) needed to be laid on its side just in case Mother Nature was in the mood to re-enact her favorite scene from The Wizard of Oz.
All was taken care of. I've never actually been witness to a tornado, but this certainly felt menacing and a bit unnerving to me. Then the rain started, followed by thunder and lightning. Truth be told, I quite enjoy a good storm, so I propped myself up next to the window and watched as the raindrops pounded the ground.
And that is when I noticed my little dog Lucy. She was frightened. I could tell by the way she held her body and how her eyes wanted to speak to me. I quickly scooped her up and felt her shaking. I held her close and began speaking softly, telling her it was o.k. That didn't really help much. So, then I put on some soothing music and rocked her like a baby. Still shaking.
The only other thing I could think of was tapping.
Tapping, or EFT, has been a God-send in my life more times than I can count. It is like having a little bit of magic in your fingertips. If you've never heard of tapping, it is a technique that combines ancient acupressure and modern psychology. So, for instance, when you are experiencing stress, if you tap on specific points on the body - the same meridian points that are used in acupuncture and acupressure - while thinking about the distress you are feeling, you will instantly feel calm and remove the upset. I know, I know it sounds a little strange, but it works!
But, I had never thought of using tapping on my dog ..until that typical Wednesday. So, I sat Lucy in my lap and gently tapped on the top of her head. Within five minutes, she had stopped shaking! She was so calm... she jumped off my lap and went in her bed and closed her eyes. The storm was still raging, but she was no longer feeling the turmoil!
I've used tapping for over 10 years and it never ceases to amaze me. Here, I was reminded how we are all connected - yes humans and animals - through spirit, love and magic!
