What are you waiting for? Jump In!
When I was six years old, I lived in Brooklyn, New York. Neighborhoodie, yet cityish. I would love to go outside and just watch. Yes, just watch. There really was so much to see, particularly in the summertime. Because I was so young, that's just about all I was allowed to do -- was watch. I would watch the older kids go on the "King Kong" ride that would drive down the street and give a thrill to the kids on the block at the same time everyday. I would watch the "fruit man" with his horse-drawn wagon (okay it really wasn't that long ago!) filled with delectable sweets as he bellowed "wa-ta-mell-on!" loud enough so that every 6th floor apartment could hear. I would watch the boys across the street play something called "Johnny on the pony" with one kid hunched over like the "pony" and then see how many other kids who could run and jump on top of him without falling. And on sweltering summer days when the NYC police department would attach a sprinkler to the nearest "johnny pump" -- otherwise known as a fire hydrant, the kids (except for me and my sisters -- Mom didn't think it was "proper" to do) would get doused and cooled-off by some crisp and refreshing Brooklyn water. But the one thing that I would watch that kept me enthralled for hours at a time was how the older girls would jump double-dutch!
Double-dutch....now that was a sight that I could watch all day long! Jumping rope with two ropes turning in tandem. And I wanted in! But there were a couple of no-no's I was dealing with at the time. I was too young and it was a no-no for me to go in the street, which is where all the action was happening. And, even if I could, the teenage girls weren't so willing to give a squirt like me a lesson. So, there I was perched on the curb with my eyes ogling up and down and up and down, until I felt sea sick!
Sitting on the sidelines and watching definitely takes a toll and loses its sparkle after a while. So I started a campaign! First it was to convince my mom that I really could go in the street and then it was to convince the girls that I really could jump like them. It took some doing, but I was determined and it worked. So there I was poised and ready and I just froze! "What was wrong?", I thought. It looked so easy. I swayed forward and back and forward and back but could not un-glue my feet from where I was standing at the edge of the swinging ropes. Finally, the girls told me to stand in the center of the two ropes, and then they would give me the cue to start jumping. One, two, three! After tripping several times and many ropes grazing my head, I was doing it! Jumping double-dutch with the big girls.....what a thrill!
I will never forget what it was like to finally get off the side lines and participate and have to wonder what relevance this story has for me in my life today.

What's it gonna take to jump in?

Tapping to Get Unstuck
I am frozen.
I really am.
There is so much I want to do, but can't seem to just get moving.
It sounds so easy.
But I just can't.
Oh, this is so frustrating!
I see other people getting ahead.
And here I am.
I'll never move.
I'm not even sure why?
I just feel frozen.
I wonder what it would be like to just take a baby step?
Or to even have one positive thought!
That wouldn't be asking too much would it?
One baby step out of stuckness and toward something more.
I wonder if one baby step is possible?
I can close my eyes and imagine.
I see myself being brave.
I see myself feeling courageous.
I've been brave before.
I can do it again.
And even if I get scared.
Even if I trip,
I can get up.
I've tripped many times before.
And I've gotten up.
I will commit to taking one baby step.
And then another.
And then another.
And then when I feel stuck.
I will remember that one baby step is all it takes.
To jumping in with courage.
So, who DOES know better than you? Scenario A: Have you ever been totally lost as to a decision you had to make and you ask a friend, colleague or confidante and they come up with just the best idea ever? And, you think to yourself "I couldn't have thought of that all by myself!" I have had this happen on more than one occasion, and I was so happy I had such insightful contacts! But does that mean I didn't have the answer? Or that I wasn't as smart? Creative? Witty? Hmmmm......
Scenario B: I have also experienced some well-meaning someone as they swore that their way was the right and only way! And for some reason or other, I was sure that wasn't the right thing for me. So what was the difference between the first scenario and the second one? And how do I get to be in more of the space of Scenario B? I think it's hard to believe we really have our own "right" answers simply because our "past" may show us otherwise. But our past shows us something else. It reveals the subtle ways our intuition speaks to us. All we need to do is quiet our inner voice (yeah, you know the one!) and in the silence something larger than life will emerge. It will be a resounding knowing; some people refer to it as a voice, a gut feeling or a hunch. Help! Is anybody listening? And if the answer doesn't come right away, it doesn't mean your "connection" to the answer is broken. It takes practice. The more time you spend in the "no thought zone", the easier it will be for you to pick up on the true answers you are waiting to receive.
Are you ready for an immediate answer to your question? Think Yes...Think No.......This is what's known as the sway test. Your personal energy system is equipped to read your emotions and truest answers even before they become top-of-mind. This is a simple (and kinda fun) way to get to know how amazing you really are! In a standing position, close your eyes and take a few deep breathes. Now think "yes". A strong and resounding "yes". Repeat "yes" in your head with conviction. Now notice for your body's gentle response. It will subtly sway forward without you moving intentionally. Now, try the same exercise with the word "no". Think of "no" with strong conviction. Breathe deeply. Repeat "no". You will now notice your body move slightly toward the back. You can use this technique to ask a yes or no question of yourself and get a surprisingly accurate answer! Practice, practice, practice!
